Member Spotlight - Amy Rechkemmer

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Well, my name is Amy Louise Rechkemmer. I live in a small town in northeast Iowa. I am blessed to be a stay at home Mom to two wonderful rambunctious little boys. Owen who is 6 and my little Lane who is 3. We are trying for another baby, and I praying to be blessed with a girl. You see I grew up with a lot of men in my life. I had five brothers and no sisters. So I am ready to be have some female bonding!
I have been married to my husband Jake for 12 years. He is a beer salesmen for a new brewery that started here in Iowa and he also hobby farms. Before being a stay at home Mom I was an insurance agent for Farm Bureau. I graduated from UNI in 2003 with a degree in Finance and Accounting. I plan to go back to work someday, but am really enjoying being at home with my little ones for now. I do scrapbooking for hire so that brings in a little fun money and so does being a consultant for AC Bailey Designs.

2. How and when did you start scrap booking?

My mother in law actually got me started. I was visiting her one day and she showed me her books. I was hooked right away. This was a little over 6 years ago right before Owen was born. I have been scraping ever since.

3. How would you describe your scrap booking style?

My style has definitely changed over the years. I really like pages that look simple and clean yet have a lot of layering and detail. This is what I try to do, it just doesn't always turn out that way. I love using lots of papers, ribbon, and embellies.

4. How often do you journal? Is it important to you?

This is an area I need to work on. I try to journal for every occasion but it doesn't always happen. I get carried away with creating a layout and then forget about actually writing about it.

5. Do you have a dedicated scrap space ( room )?

I guess you could call it that. I have a big space in my basement where I keep all my stuff and my tables. I have monthly crops down there and can fit about 12 people. On the other side are the kids toys, so it nice, they play in the same big room as Mom.
What does it look like right now? ( if you have a photo you want to share that is great)
It is pretty organized! I try to clean up and reorganize after every LO. However, while I have a "work in progress" in can look pretty messy.

6. What are your "go to " tools or supplies when you scrap?

Let's see it would have to be my paper cuter, my inks, and my ribbon. I use them on just about every layout.

7. Where do you start when you get ready to create- sketches, supplies, photos...?

I always start with the photos. I count how many photos I have for an occasion and figure out how many 2 page layouts I will make out of them. Then I will look through my paper to see what goes good, and then I add embellies.

8. Are you a scrapper or an artist?

Tough one. I am a scrapper, but my layouts are my masterpiece. So a little of both!

I was using my CropaDile last week and realized there hasn't been much discussed about this terrific tool on this board. Do you have one?

I use it for so much more than just eyelets. It will punch a whole thru 10 sheets of paper at one time (great when doing cards or invitations), will go thru a acrylic like butter and chipboard - oh yea!

Here are some instructions from the We Are Memory Keepers site:

Product Spotlight: American Crafts Slick Writers!

Quick-dry ink and a durable acrylic tip makes this the ideal marker for writing on any surface, including photos, stickers, ribbon, vellum, metal and glass. Photo safe, acid free, non toxic and waterproof ink goes on smoothly to leave an even coat of permanent, transparent color.

These are so great! They come in three thicknesses and multiple colors. They can write on so many surfaces, including stickers, shiny paper, you can also use them to write on or decorate plastic containers, buttons, brads, and glass. I reach for these when I want to label a plastic baggie for the freezer!

*Tip* You can print out your words or titles on regular paper, then put it underneath vellum, shrink plastic, transparency, or a page protector as a template to write over. This makes your writing look great- with no smearing or drying time!

Check out the specials tab in the store to see what's included in this week's POTW special!

A Just Chillin' Saturday...

That is the kind of day I have had. No sunshine here in as far back as I can remember and none predicted for us on the horizon either so while it is not the greatest conditions to take pictures of my projects and layouts it is GREAT scrappin' weather. So, I sat down with some new Making Memories Just Chillin' papers and embellishments and in a few hours I had whipped out several nice layouts of my son Nicholas playing Guitar Hero.

I have had these pics for a while. When this game first came out Nicholas pre-ordered it and was a whiz at it before most folks even knew what it was. He was so excited and proud of himself he had to haul all this stuff to my house so he could show us how well he played. I took a bunch of pics, most of which are blurry cause he is moving SO fast!!

Anyway, this Just Chillin' line is perfect for teen pics. It has lots of guitar, wing, star, bug, crown motifs (you know, the "teen stuff" you see on the clothes they wear) in the pattern of the paper, the embellishments and rubons. Speaking of embellishments, there are really nice rub-ons (the pack is loaded over 43 in there) and a pack of 16 layered chipboard stickers, and the BRADS are so cool- they are canvas and a nice size (not too big and not too small)! I love the colors, muted and earthy and so easily adapted to BOY pics or teen GIRL pics.

This layout is one of my favorites. I did LOTS of sculpting on this. I loved the embossed-like image seen here, but it was part of a colored sheet of paper that did not match with my photos, so after hours of cutting, hahahaha-I applied my favorite part it to a sheet of my always-at-the-ready Bazzill. This was a nifty way to make use of it with these pics and I had lots of fun on this layout- I sponge painted the Bazzill edges, used cut-away scraps for mats, tilted the pics (usually not a "gail thing") and I used my Basic Grey Beckham chipboard alphas. I left the milk choc chip plain, but I painted the white choc chip ones green to draw out that color from the layout elements. They painted up so nicely! I enjoyed using this product. I am sure if you will too, but get it NOW as it is flying out of the store. 4 packs of paper have sold since I checked the available quantity this morning!

Happy scrapping, be sure to look for the rest of my Just Chillin' layouts in the gallery, and if you find the SUN, would you send him MY way please???

A bit of BG

This month, I got to play with the Marrakesh line from Basic Grey which was a bit of a challenge for me as the color scheme was very different from what I usually scrap with. Bold blues and reds, meshed with geometric prints, and beautiful quilt like patterns - they inspired the clean lines of this layout. I arranged the pictures on a pre-made template, then cut out and mounted on cardstock. (One of my favorite techniques for a multipicture page!) A hint of embellishments - dont'cha just love those Kaiser wood scrolls? - and I'm done; a simple classic page that shows off the whimsyness of the pictures:

So I'm moving soon, and I thought I should get an early start on my "new address" cards. A bit of stamping, coloring, fibers and my favorite Fiskars border punch. You can't tell from the picture, but I used a bit of glossy accents on the hubcaps to make them shine :)

Till next month - Happy scrappin!

Elisabeth

What Adhesive to use on clear albums and embellishments... from clearalbums.com

Choosing an adhesive to use with your clear album can be tricky business. There are 2 main considerations: one is that the adhesive, if it does not dry perfectly clear and evenly, will be visible from the other side of your clear album page. The other is that some adhesives may not stick to the clear albums, or may lose their grip over time.

Dry adhesives like double-stick tape typically work well, but can usually be seen from the back. Use them if you plan to cover the other side of the page with something so they can not be seen.

By far, the best adhesive discovery I have made is Zip Dry Paper Glue. Don't let the name fool you! It isn't just for paper, although this adhesive is truly amazing on both paper and acrylic. There are so many wonderful things about this adhesive: it doesn't wrinkle paper. It dries clear. If applied and spread carefully and evenly, you can even use it on any area of your acrylic album that will be seen from the back. I haven't finished testing all possible adhesives, but so far Zip Dry is my first choice.

Glue Dots are a truly fantastic adhesive for use with clear albums also. Glue dots are really easy to use. Some of them can be seen from the back, although they are usually not very noticeable. The transparent ones shown on this page are better than most for this purpose.

You will want to make sure that you apply smooth, even coats of your chosen adhesive. You will also want to wash your hands frequently during this process so that you do not get fingerprints all over your clear album, especially when the adhesive gets on your fingers.

Freaky Friday Winner 6/5/09

Congratulations Jenn!
The Story of the Cake.....

Freaky Friday Challenge (From Connie):

My challenge is re-gifting or re-using flour, sugar, goldfish etc. bags. You can use them as wrapping or a gift bag. Example: you could use the sugar bag to give the ingredients of brownies along with the recipe. Add a bright bow and make a gift tag. A cute gift bag for a child would be the goldfish bag. Add yellow tissue paper , the gift and a homemade tag.

My example (http://www.acbaileyltd.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=13615&sid=7157c7b4c3e34f6eea13ce062cbb6aa) is a flour bag with the Amish friendship bread in it. Use a flour, sugar or goldfish bag in a gift way and show me!! Post your gift bag in the "Freaky Friday" folder (http://www.acbaileyltd.com/gallery/categories.php?cat_id=117) and link it back to this post by next Thursday June 18th.

Some Sassafras Lass / Jungle Bungle

I loved working with this paper. It is so bright and colorful and makes me feel like a kid again. The whole animal theme works so well with children pictures or just about any fun , family pictures. I also used the American Crafts Thickers for my title along with a Jenni Bowlin bingo card, primas, and the Jungle Bungle brads.
On this one I added some Prima flowers and the brads from Jungle Bungle. The red ric rac and button added extra dimension to the layout. I also love the extra bonus Sassafras Lass gives you on each sheet of patterned paper. There is a very cool border shape to each sheet of paper in the set.

These paper are very user friendly and just plain "fun" to play with. Go take a look at http://www.acbaileydesigns.net/product_p/11331.htm and check it out. Thanks for stopping in today and have a wonderful day!!

More from the June Goodies KOTM

I was so excited when the girls asked me to be a Guest Designer this month, and I was even more excited when I saw the great kit I was going to be working with. It is perfect for your summer photos, and a whole lot more. One of my favorite papers in the collection was this one by Jillibean called Olive Oil.

These fun little journaling spots and word art can really make your projects a lot easier to put together. On this layout I used one of the journaling spots. It was a perfect setup to describe how fun Aiden's birthday dinner was.

On my card I used a part of the paper for my sentiment and mounted it on one of the journaling sprouts that came with the kit.

When I saw the Coupons I immediately thought it would make a fun inexpensive Father's Day Gift. So I mounted it on some cardstock and tied it to a bag of chocolate.

And finally here is a clean and simple layout I pulled together with some of the scraps.

Thanks for stopping by!

Some Layouts with the ACBailey June Goodies Kit

I was lucky to work with this gorgeous kit this month. I love red, white and blue together and the papers in this kit from Cherry Art and Jillibean Soup were so pretty. This LO is of my great niece Lexie. She is a really sweet kid, very shy and quiet and getting her to even pose for a photo is hard. I was playing around with the zoom and my camera and shot this of her on Memorial Day - the fact that she had on a star necklace and the Jenni Bowlin Bingo card said "Star" was my sign to use the photo for this LO. I traced a big star and cut it out and used it for the photomat - added some other elements and painted the chipboard with Distress Paint - which was a nice finishing touch as the papers look slightly distressed. In keeping with the Memorial Day theme, Erica posted a Freaky Friday challenge in the ACBailey newsletter to do a layout using a sketch and photos from Memorial Day weekend. It was beautiful here on Long Island that weekend and I was busy the entire time. The kraft paper was a great background for the distressed look of the papers. I inked up and sanded the chipboard alphas and used photos of the events that I attended that weekend - the Air Show at Jones Beach, two Parades where some of my grandkids marched with the Scouts. Stay tuned for the next Freaky Friday Challenge coming up in a few days.
Until then,
Happy Scrappin'
Dee
